Collection: Rosemary Porter
Rosemary Porter Nampitjinpa, born in Adelaide in 1982, spent her formative years in the intimate Aboriginal community of Tjukurla, nestled alongside a vast salt lake on the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Rosemary's heritage spans both the Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjara language groups. Drawing from the time-honored dot and line techniques of the Western Desert style, she intricately portrays elements of women's ceremonies. Her artworks encapsulate the symbolism of women's body paint designs and offer a topographical glimpse into ceremonial activities intertwined with the landscape.
A recurring theme in Rosemary's art is the Tjilkamata Tjukurrpa (Echidna Dreaming) story passed down to her by her grandmother, alongside Minyma Tjukurrpa (Women's Dreaming). Employing horizontal and vertical stripes to represent the traditional lines of women's body paint, she utilizes rounded forms to depict the echidna or 'porcupine,' enriching her narratives with cultural depth and visual richness.
