Collection: Jeannie Petyarre

Jeannie Petyarre is an acclaimed Aboriginal artist from the Utopia region of Central Australia. She was born in the early 1950s in the Atnangkere country, and belongs to the Anmatyerre language group.

Jeannie comes from a family of artists, and was introduced to painting at an early age by her mother, who was a renowned artist herself. Jeannie started her career as a batik artist, but eventually transitioned to painting in acrylics on canvas.

Jeannie's paintings are inspired by the landscapes, stories, and traditions of her culture. Her works are characterized by an intricate and highly detailed style, and are often based on the Anmatyerre women's Dreaming stories.

Jeannie is best known for her use of the "Bush Medicine Leaves" motif, which has become her signature style. The motif represents the leaves of the plant used for medicinal purposes by the Anmatyerre women, and is depicted in a range of colors and patterns that evoke the changing seasons and moods of the desert landscape.

Jeannie's works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and have been collected by major art institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1996, she was awarded the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, cementing her position as one of the leading artists of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement.
